My First Director's Notes

One decade ago, I was a fourth grader in Avon. I am sure that is just as difficult for many of you to imagine as it is for me. My childhood flew by but not without its ups and downs. I still remember standing in front of my class that year singing songs or reciting the poems from the production of Free to Be... You and Me I was in that year. It is the first show I clearly remember performing, so what better way to make my solo directorial debut than with this very show!
The self-esteem and individuality movements have grown exponentially in school programs and children’s media since Marlo Thomas first published this book, but it seems that children struggle with being confident with and accepting themselves even more now than they did before the movement became mainstreamed in the 1970’s and 1980’s. We have become a nation of families that eat dinner in front of the television, children who barely have time to do their homework between all their activities, and an education system that is so focused on standardization that creativity has been thrown out the window in many districts. It is no wonder that children no longer feel free to be themselves. My hope is that this production shows everyone, adults and children alike, that life is so much more fun when we allow ourselves to be who we are in our hearts, and also that you will always find people to love and accept you for the beautiful soul you have.
I would like to take this moment to thank: my mom for always supporting me and raising me to truly be whoever I wanted to be; Nancy Kotarski for inspiring me to pass on the passion she gave me as a young fourth grader; Lori Riley for teaching me that, “Anything is possible if you believe”; Karen Mayo for always encouraging me to keep pushing forward; Beth Turcotte for showing me that our biggest, craziest dreams can and do come true; Michael Daehn for helping me see myself first and foremost as a teacher; my best friends for, well, everything; the cast and crew of this show for making this a truly magical experience; and last but certainly not least, you for coming out to hear our story. Enjoy the show!

And the Lists Begin...

hahaha before I actually start this blog, I would just like to post this text message exchange... Me: Tim we need to make more memories before I leave for college. Tim: Like babies! And now on to the real blog. Today, I started making lists concerning college (what to buy, what to pack, etc.) because that's what I do, and I decided to make a list of all the things I want to do before I leave for school. So here are the 28 things (28 for all the days I have left before I leave) that I want to do before I leave. They're not in any particular order except for the order in which they popped in my head. Go see Harry Potter again Get my tattoo Go to Kings Island Hang out at the lake with my friends See Grease with Tim and Deandre Teach my mom how to use iTunes and how to do stuff on the HCT fanpage Take pictures at the park with Tim and TALK Sort my clothes and shoes for college Update my digital picture frame with newer pictures Go to the eye doctor Shop for college stuff Buy new cl...

Love Monologue from the movie Stardust

Yvaine: You know when I said I knew little about love? That wasn't true. I know a lot about love. I've seen it; I've seen centuries and centuries of it. It's the only thing that made watching your world bearable. All the wars, pain, lies, and hate, made me want to turn away and never look down again. But to see the way that mankind loves! I mean you could search the furthest reaches of the universe and never find anything more beautiful. So, yes I know that love is unconditional, but I also know it can be unpredictable, unexpected, uncontrollable, unbearable, and strangely easy to mistake for loathing. And, well, what I'm trying to say, Tristan, is.. I think I love you. My heart it feels like my chest can barely contain it, like it doesn't belong to me anymore; it belongs to you, and if you wanted it, I'd wish for nothing in exchange: no gifts, no goods, no demonstrations of devotion, nothing, but knowing you love me, too. Just your heart in exchange for min...

Inspiration Pt. 4

Today, I graduated from therapy. I began there on March 11th, and I ended on April 11th. The counselors were proud of me, amazed that I was ready to leave so quickly. But I wasn't. I wanted it. I wanted to get better. I was eager to learn, eager to work, eager to listen. I fought hard every single day to get better.  The graduation ceremonies are always bitter sweet. Everyone sits around in the small group circle, and they pass around a pin that looks like a dove, and the members of the group and counselors talk about you and give you words of encouragement. The counselors were the only ones there today who had seen me when I first came into the program, everyone else had started after me. One after another, though, everyone spoke about how positive I was. One of the group members even went so far as to say I had a beautiful, colorful aura around me. The counselor told me I gave thoughtful, holistic feedback that would be missed when I was gone. Most people cry, but I didn't. I...
